Film is a powerful medium because we view it in a distracted state. "Distracted masses absorb the work of art into themselves." Film has the advantage of the shock effect combined with entertaining qualities. It is also democratizing as it is made to be seen and understood by the masses; each image meant to be understood within the context of the previous and following image.
