Walter BenjaminThere are dangers for such an influential medium and that can be seen in the hands of capitalism. Hollywood has taken film and used it as a "publicity machine" "corrupt[ing] the original and justified interest of the masses in film - an interest in understanding themselves and therefore their class." Movie stars are used as influential beings for monetary gain and set societal standards that are not always healthy.

There is also the risk of "psychic immunization against...mass psychoses." Although violent films can be viewed as an outlet for preventing such outbursts in the masses, it can also numb the audience to these "sadistic fantasies or masochistic delusions" and lessen their shock with mass saturation.

"Film capital uses the revolutionary opportunities implied by this control for counterrevolutionary purposes."
