- To apply your knowledge of basic compositional rules and guidelines
and create images that have strong impact because they conform to these
rules, then break the rules with impact.
- To demonstrate an understanding of when to use the rules / guidelines
of good composition, and when to intentionally break them.
- BASIC RULES TO IMPLEMENT ARE:
1. Leading Lines
2. Rule of Thirds
3. Framing
4. Simplicity (KISS principle - Keep It Simple Silly)
- RULES TO BREAK WITH IMPACT:
1. Any 2 of the above Rules.
- TOTAL NUMBER OF IMAGES = 6

Procedure
- Photograph in daylight conditions, but it does NOT have to be bright
sun. Refer to the Alternate BEF Chart from 02Lesson in
the COURSE OUTLINE.
- Determine proper f/stop and shutter speed settings for the actual
light conditions as you interpret them to be.
- Make your adjustments from BEF with aperture (f/stop) so that you
can observe different DOF (Depth of Field) responses in your resulting
images.
- Try to work within these variations (using our Santa Barbara BEF Formula
Adjustment) and make your exposure adjustments with aperture only (not
shutter speed).
1. BEF = bright sunny light = 1/125 @ f/11 (or equivalent)
2. -1 BEF = hazy light = 1/125 @ f/8 (or equivalent)
3. -2 BEF = overcase light = 1/125 @ f/5.6 (or equivalent)
4. -3 BEF = heavy overcast light = 1/125 @ 4 (or equivalent)
-
Photograph 4 separate images (subjects) applying
the following guidelines:
Leading Lines
Rule of Thirds
Framing
Simplicity (KISS principle - Keep It Simple Silly)
-
Photograph 2 more images that are Rule Breakers
Choose Two of the Rules above to Break
-

Tips
- Think about TIME OF DAY as an important contributor to enhancing
your subject's appeal.
- Often early morning or late afternoon, close to sunset or just after,
provide the most dramatic lighting conditions.
- Avoid literal, predicitable solutions.
- SUBJECTIVE CHAIR: narrative (storytelling). Location can/should be
a surprise. Distorted image/perspective can add impact.
