5. Shoot with the Canon D-30 and download to CD or zip.

**6. Bring in 'hi res' files from shoe assignment for distribution and completion of SHOE POSTERS.

Week #7: 3/7

METERING
• MEASURE WITH THE METER PARALLEL TO THE PLANE OF GREATEST IMPORTANCE (in this case it's the face) AND THEN TURN THE DOME IN THE DIRECTION OF THE MAIN LIGHT.
• BE SURE THE FILL SYSTEM IS ACTIVE DURING MEASURE- MENT (in this case the fashion board is the fill system).
• MEASURE THE BACKGROUND LIGHT AT THE HEAD AND POWER IT TO EQUAL YOUR WORKING APERTURE (STARTING POINT - ADJUST AS NEEDED)
• MEASURE THE BACKGROUND LIGHT AT THE BACKDROP IN THE AREA THAT MATCHES THE HORIZONS OF THE SHOULDER AND HEAD AND POWER IT TO BE ONE STOP BRIGHTER THAN YOUR WORKING APERTURE.

DOWNLOADING IMAGES FROM CAMERA TO COMPUTER:
1. When done, download to the G4 next to the large format printers. Use the USB cord in the camera bag and attach to both the camera and the computer. The Canon Image Browser will automatically download the images from the camera to the browser. BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN DISCONNECTING THE USB CORD FROM THE CAMERA, IT REQUIRES PUSHING THE BACKSIDE OF THE CORD AS YOU RETRACT IT FROM THE CAMERA'S CONTACT POINT.
2. In the camera's browser, download all your images to the Canon Image Window. Once in the window environment, select as many images as you would like to save and under MENU>EDIT select Adobe Photoshop. This will upload your images directly into Photoshop. From Photoshop you can save them to the DAC server and then to your portable media (zip or CD).
3. AT THE END OF YOUR PHOTO SESSION, REMOVE THE BATTERY AND REPLACE IT WITH THE CHARGING BATTERY ON THE COUNTER TOP TO THE LEFT OF THE G4 COMPUTER. REPLACE YOUR USED BATTERY IN THE CAMERA WITH THE FRESHLY CHARGED BATTERY.

Lecture:
Substitute Instructor - Derrick Bruce (Agave Studio)

1. DAC photo studio will be open for glamour shooting; Derrick Bruce will be available for technical assistance.
2. Download images to CD or zip.
3. Work on Shoe Poster in Hi Res (Image>Image Size: 8.5x11 inches @ 300ppi -- should create approx. 24 MB file) . RESCAN IF NECESSARY.

Lab: Glamour Head Shot (one light -- background or hair light optional)
1. Recommended working apertures between f/5.6 and f/11
2. Use a Fashion Board (white or silver mat board)
3. Recommended lighting pattern: Paramount
4. Recommended ratios are between 1:1 to 1:3 -- completely flat to no more than one stop between highlights and shadows (under the nose and neck area)
5. Background should be middle to light grey (natural fall off on a white background approximately 4' away will produce values in this range)
6. Background light can be directed back at the subject's hair
or on the background itself. Direct towards hair with white seamless backdrop. Direct towards background with muslin backdrop.
7. Create clean lighting to compliment quality makeup application (for color photography the recommendation for eyes and lips is 'a little more' than nightime applications)
Canon D-30 Instructions:
1. Refer to the instruction manual in the front zip pocket of the camera bag when necessary.
2. Turn on both 'ON' buttons on the back of the camera.
3. Push 'MENU' button on back of camera and check quality setting (use top 'LARGE' setting)
4. Check ISO setting (below 'Quality' setting in MENU) and make sure it's set to 100.
5. To change either settings above, turn the large circular dial on back and options shift from 'QUALITY' to 'ISO' etc. Stop at the option you wish to change and push the center button in the middle of the large circle dial. Then rotate the dial until the desired setting is selected, then push the center button to lock in the desired setting.
6. After shooting there is a short preview of your shot on the LCD monitor. To see you shot(s) for a longer time, press the 'play' button on the lower left back (looks like a sideways triangle). A full screen image will appear. Push 'INFO' button to see your image with its corresponding histogram.
7. Make sure your histogram on final images is optimum (as illustrated in class on the demo shots of Lisa). DO NOT INTENTIONALLY OVER OR UNDER EXPOSE YOUR SHOTS.

Homework:DUE: 3/14
1. Download glamour shots to DAC Server Folder and Portable Media.
2. Create a minimum of four variations from one head shot (see week six for some suggestions) on one photo page (8.5x11)
3. Bring Epson Photo Paper for printing head shots.
4. Refine and complete 24x30 Shoe Poster submission.

• Duane Michals - "The problem with young photographers today is that they have all the know-how, but they have nothing to say; they just regurgitate cliché."
• Michael Ackerman - "... if you are not brought up where you are born you are forever a little restless. [it clarifies]...what it means to be an outsider, to not belong, yet have some strong feelings towards where you are. For one thing, it means you are a guest and what you are after is unattainable. Maybe you are always looking for yourself. It does seem to me that as an outsider you often get deeper inside. You often see what others may be blind to. For example, classic reportage photograpy, with its beginning - middle - end narrative is completely boring to me. It lacks something so essential. Yet work done by certain photographers who have that reslessness, that feeling of not belonging, like Louis Faurer, Robert Frank, Leon Levinstein, Josef Koudelka, for example, I find fascinating. Its open eded. The more I look at it the more I see. For me it's important to show what life FEELS like, not what it looks like. Maybe that quest is for the truth that lies beyond the fact, beneath the skin. That thing that is true to everyone."

Sharpening Techniques II
...............Lab Method
...............High Pass Filter
Masking Technique (from the image itself)
1. From the DAC server, Class Materials Folder, get LA Sky and RedHairGirl files.
............. Drag LA Sky file into RedHairGirl file creating a second layer with both images - girl and sky (drag w/ commandShift).
2. Duplicate the background layer in this new file.
3. Drag the sky image layer so that its positioned below the girl image layer.
4. Select the girl layer and go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Channel Mixer.
5. Once in Channel Mixer, click on Monochrome (lower left of box).
6. Slide Red to approx. –130. Slide Green to approx. +200. Slide Blue to approx. +25. Click ‘OK’.
7. Select Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels and pull highlight slider to the left, midtone slider to the left (or right) and shadow values to the right -- until you have good contrast between background and model’s hair and figure (don’t lose fine hair detail).
8. Select ‘Select > All’
9. Select ‘Edit>Copy Merged’
10. Select ‘Channels’ in the Layers window
11. Select ‘New Channel’ (at base of window) --- the icon looks like a document page. This will be called ‘Alpha 1’ by default.
12. Select ‘Edit>Paste’ – you should now have a new Alpha Channel (mask) of the image you adjusted in Channel Mixer previously.
13. Select ‘Select > Deselect’.
14. Now use the burn and dodge tools (selecting midtones, shadows or highlights as appropriate) to selectively exaggerated the difference in values between model, hair, and background. Remember to burn and dodge selectively in Shadows, Midtones or Highlights. [Recommended percentage is 30%]
15. Once ‘mask’ is all black and white, Invert it so the model ‘area’ is all white and the background area is all black.
16. Load this mask as a selection by clicking the Load Channel icon at base of Channel window (dotted circle). [Another way to do this is to ‘command click’ on the Alpha channel.]
17. Return to the Layers window and turn of the ‘eye’ icon for the Channel Mixer layer(s).
18. Select the model Layer and ‘load’ this selection as a mask. This is accomplished by clicking icon at the base of the layer window that looks like a square with a circle in the middle.
19. Clean up mask with paintbursh and/or eraser tools.
20. Your done ... Yeah!

Lab:
• SoMA Submissions (dueFriday noon)
• Select final portfolio submissions (in class edit)

Homework:
1. Photo Essays - Due May 16th

Week #17: 5/16

Lecture:
• Final Sharpening Technique (12 Step Method)
...............Lab USM Method
...............High Pass Filter Method
...............RGB Channel Method

RED Channel / Edges Selection Method

• This technique selects the edges with the most contrast without selecting the homogenous areas of tone (less chance of creating non-descript artifacts). Only the more “contrasty” edges are sharpened and will be the most subtle USM method. Good for people and images with fine detail.
1. Select the Red Channel
2. Duplicate the Red Channel.
3. Filters – Stylize – Find Edges
4. Image – Adjust – Invert
5. Filters – Noise – Median, radius @ 2
6. Filters – Other – Maximum, radius @ 4
7. Filters – Blur – Gaussian Blur @ 4 (airbrush any spots out at this stage)
8. Click RGB layer and Cmd/Click the 'Red copy' (the new alpha channel you've been working on). This selects the areas of highest contrast as a selection.
9. Filter – Unsharp – set amount at 125%, radius at 0.3, and threshold at 3 (in a digital capture try a setting of 75%, radius 1.5, threshold 3).
10. Deselect
11. Alpha channel to trash
12. Repeat for increased sharpness if necessary.

Additional Suggestion:
• If sharpening effect is too intense, start over and adjust the unsharpen threshold to a value of 1.
• Make an Action function key out of these steps and you can repeat this effect progressively at will by hitting the pre-assigned function key.
