How to Set up a Booklet in Indesign

InDesign can publish documents in several formats that suit the user's aesthetic and usage needs. Users who need pamphlets, newsletters or multiple-page small publications can use the "Print Booklet" tool to create book-style prints with sequential, re-ordered pages. Booklets can be set up
as folded, stapled or cut and glue-bound publications, and can be single- or double-sided.

1. Click the on "File" in the top menu bar and then select "Print Booklet." The "Setup" tab of the "Print Booklet" window will appear.

2. Input a range of pages to be printed or leave the "All" option checked if you want all the pages in the open publication to be included.

3. Click a booklet style from the "Booklet Type" menu. The "2-up Saddle Stitch" option allows pages to be printed, folded and then stapled. "2-up Perfect Bound" is ideal for larger booklets, as pages are folded or cut in sets, and then glued to a cover. "Consecutive" style allows you to create
pamphlet-style booklets that are bi- or tri-fold.

4. Adjust the "Space Between Pages" and "Margins" options. The "Space Between Pages" value is adjustable for any booklet style except "2-up Saddle Stitch" and determines how much space there is between pages. Values in the "Margins" boxes determine how much space there is between the edges of the page and the booklet content. You can also specify a value for the "Bleed Between Pages" option for "2-up Perfect Bound" style booklets, which determines how much content crosses over or "bleeds" into facing pages.

5. Click the "Preview" tab to display a preview mock-up of the booklet. Clicking the "Print" button will start a print job for your booklet.

Tips & Warnings
You can add page numbers to a booklet by:
- creating a text box on the master page
- then clicking "Type" on the menu bar and
- then clicking "Insert Special Character,"> "Markers" >"Current Page Number."

If you have a printer without double-sided printing capability, print odd numbered pages first, re-stock the paper tray with the printed pages and then print the even numbered pages.

If you have blank pages in your document, InDesign may not recognize them as part of the booklet. To fix this, check the "Print Blank Printer Spreads" option in the "Setup" tab.
