Assignment Project: The Transport Device
Grade: 100 points (See Rubric below)
Due: Sunday, April 11, 5pm

Your challenge for this assignment is to create a device to transport one person from one island to another island.
The device must keep the driver safe and dry.
You and a partner will will work as a team to develop ideas and then build the device in Second Life.
To help you think in a divergent manner follow the process outlined below.

The Limitations to this challenge are:
• No gasoline or electric engines may be used.
• The device must navigate over a given course (course to be determined by you).
• Device may be futuristic.
• Boats, planes or any similar traveling devices cannot be used.
Process: Phase 1-Divergent Thinking - To get you thinking in a different way with fluency and flexibility.
You and your partner will decide how to communicate and share your ideas.
You may use the Transport Device Forum or meet in SL and exchange note cards
with your process and discuss ideas there.

Each team member will create their own Word document with #1-5:

1. Select 30 objects at random.
The objects should not relate to your challenge.
2. You can select any objects at home, at work, objects you might find walking down the street, objects in a store.
3. In a Word document create two columns.
List 15 of the objects in the left column and 15 in the right column.
4. Randomly pick one object from the left and combine it with one object from the right.
You may combine more than two objects.
5. Create as many combinations as possible (list them all).

6. Create a note card with the above lists and arrange to meet with your partner in SL to exchange note cards or
post the above lists in the Transport Device Forum in Moodle and exchange ideas.
Either way, you will be discussing all ideas.

7. After discussing all ideas, you and your partner will:
8. Decide on THREE promising combinations that might help you develop a creative device and
list them again. Will any of these combinations work better together?
Try mixing and matching or continue to pull from the combinations list.

Process: Phase 2 -Mind Mapping (working with your partner)

• Now take the word "travel" and create a mind map around that word.
The mind map should be as extensive as possible and the words should relate to travel initially
but feel free to spin off on other ideas.
• Push yourself until you can't think of any more word responses. Get crazy with it.
• Then begin to make connections from the mind map and list them.
You may combine the connections too.
• Then, write responses to those combinations thinking about transporting one person.

Process: Phase 3
• Next look at all your combinations from the 30 random objects list and see
if you can make connections with the mind map combinations/responses.
• Now, you have all the ideas to develop your device.
• Remember it can be futuristic.

Process: Phase 4
• Name your device and explain how it works.
•  Build your device in Second Life.
Contact NIna or Liz for help building.
• Photograph your device.

HAND-IN:
• Upload ONE Word Document showing your ENTIRE process.
• Upload at least one jpg of the completed device.
• To allow your partner to copy and move your device do the following:
Right click>Pie Cahrt>EDIT>General tab>Select ANYONE CAN COPY>ANYONE CAN MOVE
• TAKE your device into your inventory after it is completed and
leave one device in the classroom area.
