EXERCISE : Double Effect
Grade: 100points
Due: Week#3, Monday, 9am
Process:
DOUBLE EFFECT
This is a variation of the Random Input exercise but it requires much more creative effort.
Two challenges/problems are defined at the same time.
One Random Word is obtained.
The task is to see how the same Random Word can provide
ideas for each one of the challenges/problems.
NOTE: It may be the same concept that is extracted
from the Random Word and then applied to each of
the challenges/problem.
It may be a different concept that is extracted from
the Random Word for each of the different focuses.
Process:
1. The two Challenges/Problems are
#1: "traffic lights" and
#2: "burglary"
2. Choose ONE random word for both challenges/problems.
3. List 10 different thoughts/ideas to solve the stated challenges/problems.
4. Copy and paste your stated task, random word and ideas into this forum.
5. Comment on at least TWO other student submissions.
SUGGESTION
It is useful to jot down your ideas. Perhaps you could even keep
a log book of your ideas and your progress.
Exercise Example:
Challenge/Problem #1: "traffic lights."
Challenge/Problem #2: "burglary."
The Random Word is: VALUE.
Immediate thoughts:
... value needs to be seen in advance. So some advanced
way of knowing what the traffic lights are going to do next
... some way of letting burglars know in advance that there
is nothing worth stealing in the house. Perhaps a visible
insurance certificate
Further thoughts:
... values depend on circumstances. So traffic light behavior
should depend on the time of day and the state of traffic
... goods are of no value to a burglar if they cannot be resold.
So some invisible spray that could identify stolen Items
so the ultimate seller would be held responsible.
