Master Pages
InDesign master pages allow you to place the common elements of pages within your document one time, in one place, instead of having to add those elements separately to each individual page. For example, if you want the title of the document and the page number to appear at the bottom of every page within the document, put it on the master page, then base the appropriate document pages on that master page.
How to Create Master Pages
Style Sheets can be real time savers for designers especially in the creation of long or multi-page documents. Style Sheets are simply recorded format that you can then use in your design at will.
There are Character styles and Paragraph Styles.
Consistency is one of the principles that designers must follow. Style Sheets help the designer so s/he doesn't have to apply manually the same type of formatting over and over again throughout the document.
Let me give you an example. You are designing a magazine promoting a certain item. You want to have all of your titles with a certain font, a certain size and a certain color. You have three paragraphs where the font is 11 point and two paragraphs where the font is 12 point and you also want a specific amount of space between each paragraph.
You can record all of this information in a Style Sheet and then apply them to each title and each paragraph with a click.
Now, let's say that you decide that the titles are too small and they all have to be made 4 points bigger. Well, you just go to your Character Style Sheet and modify the size of your font there and all of the parts of text with that Character Style Sheet will change in one go.
If you decide that the 11 point paragraphs need to be 10.5 point, and you want less space between each paragraph, you just go to the Paragraph style sheet and make that change.
