The intention of this problem is to develop geometric ideas through the discovery of the various two dimensional design elements and design principles needed to extend a limited graphic vocabulary. You will use your newly acquired knowledge of design principles and elements to communicate through shapes and lines only.
Design Elements:
- Line, shape, texture and color
Design Principles:
- Alignment, balance, contrast, emphasis, flow
When placing elements think about framal reference; touching; overlapping and cropping of forms; contrast of elements in terms of size, direction, space, position, negative-positive space. The discoveries result from experimentation with the interrelationships of forms, a vital experience for the growth of a designer developing a personal, formal style.
Combining these principles can further expand a mere graphic vocabulary into a comprehensive, abstract graphic language, maximizing the possibilities for graphic expression.
Things to consider as you begin to design:
EXPERIMENT with every conceivable position of the elements in the space to get a feel for the tension and interest created within the space.
How you have divided the space, either in equal (symmetrical parts) or unequal (asymmetrical parts).
Does changing the length and weight of the lines and shapes influence the position of it on the page? A heavier line may look and feel better in a particular position where a smaller, thinner line will not work.
Consider the white space left after you place the line. Is it balanced and interesting to look at?
