GDP 114 - Idea Drawings
Assignment Details
For this assignment, visually interpret each object 20 different ways.
Begin by creating the original object in the first thumbnail box.
There are no limitations on the use of color or media.
In the professional world of design, challenging problems often call for unique imagery. This problem encourages playing, risk taking, and experimentation. It also teaches endurance and resourcefulness. The requirement of trying to find so many preliminary ideas can be exhausting.
This is the critical point in the assignment, when attention wanders and impatience sets in. By simply completing this demanding assignment, the designer begins to believe in his or her own possibilities.
You will upload the file as a PDF. If you create the drawings manually, scan or photograph your work and save as a PDF to upload.
....AND have FUN!
Before you begin, develop a list of ideas to help you think of creative solutions.
Attribute Listing is one of many creative techniques to help you think creatively.
The technique of attribute listing consists of listing all the attributes or qualities of an object and then listing all the things you know the object can do and then list all the things that could be possible with this object.
This process will help empty your brain of all the common things this object is known to do. Your brain is then FREE to think of different things the object can be or do. These new ideas do not need to be truly viable.
Your final drawn solutions do not need to be anything from the list.
Examples of attributes include:
• physical attributes, such as color, speed, odor, weight, size, and mass;
• social attributes, such as norms, taboos, responsibilities, leadership, and
communication;
• psychological attributes, such as perception, motivation, appearance, symbolism,
self-image, and needs
Summary of Steps
1. List all the attributes or qualities of a problem or object.
2. List all the things the object is known to do.
3. List all the NEW things you think the object can be used for.
