Project: DESIGNING FOR MOBILE DEVICES
Grade: 100 points
(see rubric)

Objective - Design a game interface for a mobile device that utilizes the design principles while taking into consideration the rules for mobile design.

Combining the principles of design and the design elements of
line, shape, texture and color create a splash screen for a game
for a mobile device. You may choose to create your own game,
use an existing game or the sample provided for this
assignment. Pay attention to readability, design and functionality.

Hint: Stay away from the use of serif fonts for small type as it
may break up due to the bitmapping. Also make sure there is
ample contrast when using color in type to insure readability.

Specifications:
• The final design must be 320 x 480 pixels
• Colors must be rgb only
• Must include the following:
- Name of the game
- A minimum of 4 buttons or links
- Graphic elements or illustrations only (no photos)

Process:
1. Create 6 thumbnails (draw manually and scan and save as jpg) that utilize the same elements in 6 different layout designs. Utilizing the same elements in each thumbnail, change color,
scale and position. Work actual size. Make sure your thumbnails
are very clean and easy to interpret.
Before you design, Google images - smart phone apps to get some ideas.
2. Choose your favorite design and create the artwork in Adobe
Illustrator.
3. Save the file as jpg for web and devices, then view it in device
central (option at the bottom righ of menu). If your own phone does not appear choose another. Be sure to view the two video tutorial before you begin.

4. View the following tutorials:

5. If necesary modify the artwork based on your observations
of the design when seen on the device.

6. As you view your design in device central, take a screen shot of your device with your design.
Mac - command+option+shift+4 this gives you a cross hair icon that you can draw a box just around the image you need. This is saved on your desktop as screen shotxxx.
PC - Print screen key>ctrl+P> select PDF and save. Open this image in Photoshop to crop extraneous parts.

7. Post the final jpeg in the forum. Name the device you
viewed it on, design principles you used and any challenges you
faced when creating your design.

8. Comment on at least 2 other student's designs in the forum.
Discuss why you feel the design works or not in terms of the
design principles and functionality. Use complete thoughts and be specific. Comments such as "nice colors" or "good use of
design principles" are not enough.
