Poster Design - Type ONLY

A Poster is any large piece of paper which hangs from a wall or other such surface. They are a frequent tool of advertisers, propagandists, protestors and other groups trying to communicate a message, and they also see personal use by people, especially the young, who wish to decorate in a relatively low-cost manner.

What is important to be aware of here is how TYPE is used in place of graphic elements. Working with the letterforms to create an interesting and well designed layout will be your challenge.

As you look through the links below, it will be your job to observe how the letterforms become the 'actors' on the page. How do they grab the viewers attention? What is happening to the space arouind the letterforms? How are the letterforms grouped together to create distinctive shapes?

Using Layout Grids Effectively
You must also be aware of the imprtance of grids in designing your poster. Setting up a simple grid, both horizontally and vertically, will help you divide the space in interesting ways as you place the letterforms within the grid (and you can break the grid too).

Grids are integral to any layout. It is a tremendous help (especially for beginners) when placing elements in an interesting way on the page.
Grids help you think about alignment and unity. The grid helps to create interesting positive and negative space and a well balanced layout.

Begin to be aware of grid systems in advertisements, books, magazines and web pages.
