Assignment: Joining Second Life / Create an Avatar
Grade: 100 points

1. Read ALL the SL links and watch ALL the videos listed in GETTING STARTED IN SL BEFORE you attempt to register.
Some of you may already have an avatar.
Do take the time to read through all the links - you'll undoubtedly learn something new. big grin

If you already have your avatar - skip down to #9 to complete the assignment.

2. Register for SL at the Second Life website. Follow the steps in the Capt. Mubble Part 1 video.

a. Pick name for your avatar. Last names have already been identified by SL so
scroll down and pick one of these and then make up your own first name.
Pick an androgynous name! For examples go to: http://www.yeahbaby.com/article.php?page=79
Remember that your name CAN NOT be changed so choose one you like and spell it correctly.
Be aware, if you type in your first name without a capitol letter you cannot change it later.

b. Complete the demographic section and include your email.
c. Once completed you will receive email from SL.
d. Go to your email and activate your account.

3. Select your avatar (you can change your appearance later).

4. Download and run the SL interface software.
This is available at: http://secondlife.com/community/downloads.php

5. The SL icon (a hand) is now on your desktop. Click this icon in the future to enter SL.

6. From the SL connection page, enter your SL name and password
(see video Adventures of Capt. Mubble pt.2).
Click Connect.

7. You will land on Orientation Island. This is where you can begin to learn more about SL.
I would suggest you open the PDF Tutorials at this point to help you with some basics.

8. You might also try this educational orientation island, NMC. This link is a slurl.
To use a slurl, you must first be in SL.
Then click this link (NMC) which will take you to a web page.
Then click on the TELEPORT NOW button. Your avatar will automatically TP to that location.

9. Once you have gone through the orientation you will now experiment using SNAPSHOTS.

10. Take a snapshot of your avatar and save it to your hard drive.
Keep the snapshot size 200px X 200px.
You can take the snapshot in orientation island or use the SEARCH button and type in SGDI and that will
TP you to the SBCC island or try any other place you wish.

11. In the discussion area ADD A NEW QUESTION, type your avatars first and last name EXACTLY as you have registered it AND
INSERT the photo of your avatar.

12. Now take a look at your classmates avatars!

13. My Avatar, Zil Jewell, will send you a Friendship invitation. The next time you go into SL, Accept the invitation.

14. If any of you wish to upload your snapshot and use it as your SL profile photo read how in the Snapshot tutorial pdf.
Any time you upload an image to SL you need to pay L$10 (10 Linden dollars).
