Assignment: Hierarchy of Information in a Layout
Grade: 100 points
Due: Wednesday, March, 4 - Midnight

Objectives:
Using the basic typographic techniques of font size, weight, and position to establish a
hierarchy of information in a layout.

Assignment:
Using the text in this attached file (the text used for this assignment is from the book The Elements of Typographic Style by
Robert Bringhurst) develop layouts following the specifications below.

You will create design layouts that determine the importance of the information;
which should be seen/read first, second, third etc. by the viewer.

You will create TWO DIFFERENT designs for each of the layouts for a total of SIX designs.
Use ONE Indesign file with one layout on each page.
Label each layout in the upper left corner with it’s corresponding number, i.e. Layout#1.

Process:
• Open a 6”x6” Indesign file with a .25” margin.
• Each layout must have a 1pt. black frame and add the frame last (add the frame to the 6" page).
• Open the Word file with the text.
Copy each group of information and then paste into the Indesign file
to create an individual text box for each group of info.
This will allow for easier arrangement of information.
• Right click on the PAGE in the page layout box and DUPLICATE SPREAD.
This will add another page with all the elements. You will then rearrange the design.
• All designs must be black (no color or shades of gray).
• Use only a white background.
• Use only the normal width font (no condensed or extended versions).
• Use only the supplied text.
• All Type must be set horizontally.
• DO NOT use a centered alignment for any of the layouts.
• Always consider line spacing and column width as you make your layout decisions.

Layout#1: Use Helvetica, 9pt. type, to establish hierarchy using position ONLY.
Layout#2: Use Times, 11pt. type,to establish hierarchy using position and WEIGHT ONLY.
Layout#3: Helvetica OR Times to establish hierarchy using position, weight and a variety of SIZE.
See how creative you can be on this one!

• Save the Indesign file.

•Export as a PDF (high quality print) to upload and submit.
